This is not a tribute to myself. Rather, I am carrying on the tradition of self-portraiture that is so integral to art history. It is more of a culmination of thoughts I have on self-portraiture all wrapped up into one painting. It is simple yet revealing, true to life yet idealized.

It has always fascinated me that after studying an artist’s work, when I see their self-portrait I can immediately understand who they were. I can see if they were self loathing and overly critical of themselves or incredibly confident and free-willed. It was all in how they depicted themselves. We are all prone to having a fixed image of ourselves; artists are the ones that open that up for others to see.

I painted this while in the midst of a personal conflict. Who I was in the mirror while I painted for those few days was a finite documentation of myself.
