This is an unusual tribute to Piet Mondrian because it is so far away from his highly identifiable abstract work. Yet, as I painted I kept thinking of his Windmill in Sunlight from 1908. His use of red, yellow and blue to describe the back-lit windmill is very compelling.

This is a depiction of the Parkville section of Hartford in February. It was a day when there was a snowstorm rolling through Hartford. It was eerie because on the northern end of the street there was a whiteout of snow. On the southern end of the street it was absolutely clear and I could see past the storm to the setting sun. I immediately grabbed my camera. That day really stayed in my mind, and made for a visually rewarding landscape. The photos I took only capture the sunset, as the storm was out of view by the time I thought to grab my camera. So from memory I added the snowdrifts and storm clouds.
