Yes, this is a breakup painting. When I started working on it back in January of last year for a body of still life work, I wanted to create something with a reactionary feel to it. Shepard Faireys work was fresh in my mind after seeing his recent show at the Institute of Contemporary art in Boston. I had been thinking about him for quite sometime and really enjoyed his work. So after the show I knew where Id be going with this still life.
Note the limited color palette (with a concentration on the fiery red), the intense back lighting and the slightly misconstrued shadow pattern on the wall. I wanted to combine my straightforward approach to trompe loeil painting to his stylistic approach to visually empowering political artwork. Fairey borrows and appropriates a large majority of the imagery he uses in his paintings such as Soviet era propaganda posters. Reactionary tendencies run through all of these aesthetically intertwined artworks.
